Petersburg High School was placed under lockdown Monday afternoon after shots were fired near the school around the time of student dismissal. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, though a heavy police presence remains in the area as the investigation continues.
According to a post from Petersburg City Public Schools, the lockdown was initiated out of an abundance of caution after gunfire was heard near the high school. CBS 6 crews at the scene observed several shell casings in the parking lot and police units actively securing the perimeter.
Vernon Johns Middle School Also Affected
In addition to Petersburg High School, Vernon Johns Middle School was also placed on lockdown during the incident. School officials stated that students were safely sheltered inside while law enforcement responded to the situation.
By approximately 4 p.m., Vernon Johns Middle School began dismissing students in coordination with local authorities, ensuring that transportation and safety measures were in place.
Police and School Officials Respond
The Petersburg Police Department confirmed via social media that officers were actively investigating near Johnson Road and Homestead Drive, urging residents to avoid the area while the scene remained active.
